Global Handwashing Day
– Our Future is at Hand

October 15th
Global Handwashing Day
Washing hands is a common practice that people do every day, even multiple times a day. It’s an essential part of being healthy because it helps protect against viruses, bacteria and other harmful substances stuck to the hands, especially in the autumn and winter seasons. Hand hygiene is so important that it’s recognized annually on Global Handwashing Day.

Celebrated on October 15th each year, Global Handwashing Day is a day of global advocacy dedicated to promoting handwashing as an easy, effective and affordable way to prevent diseases. This year’s theme, “Our Future is at Hand – Let’s Move Forward Together,” is endorsed by governments, schools, international institutions, NGOs, private companies and more.

Global Handwashing Day calls on all parts of the world to pay attention to the simple but imperative action of handwashing. It serves as a reminder of the importance of washing hands frequently with soap or hand sanitizer as a way to save lives. In addition, it encourages people to support healthy behaviors and develop habits of cleanliness, and encourages governments and communities to improve environmental sanitation, including hand washing facilities.

Washing hands well is more significant than people realize. It plays a major role in avoiding sickness and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean water. Throughout the day, people’s hands are constantly in contact with objects contaminated by viruses and bacteria. By not washing their hands well, pathogens can enter the body through their mouth, eyes and nose. From the common cold to more serious infections, washing hands regularly can prevent the spread of many diseases.

Six Common Misconceptions about Handwashing
1、Handwashing needs to be long. Generally, just 20 seconds is needed to wash away germs on hands.
2、Rinsing with clean water is sufficient. Hand sanitizer or soap is necessary to wash away viruses and bacteria.

3、Washing hands in a washbasin cleans hands. After washing hands in a washbasin several times, the water becomes polluted so hands are still dirty and contaminated.
4、Scrubbing with a lot of soap or hand sanitizer is necessary to clean hands. Lots of hand cleanser when washing can be difficult to rinse off and excessive rubbing may cause inflammation of the skin, making it is easier for bacteria to inhabit.

5、Dry hands with a towel. It’s ideal to dry hands naturally or wipe dry with a disposable paper towel since towels retain germs and can infect clean hands.

6、Replace handwashing with hand sanitizer or wipes. Hand sanitizer and wipes used repeatedly do not remove all germs. Neither should replace handwashing.

Seven Steps for Properly Washing Hands

Step 1
Wet hands with water and apply enough soap to cover the surfaces of each hand.

Step 2
Wet hands with water and apply enough soap to cover the surfaces of each hand.

Step 3
Interlace fingers and rub soap between each finger; alternate hands.

Step 4
Rub the soap into each thumb and palm.

Step 5
Rub the soap into the back of each hand.

Step 6
Rub soap onto each wrist area and wash.

Step 7
Rinse the soap off completely and dry hands.

Handwashing is just as important as drinking water every day to protect one’s health. With filtered water, people do not have to worry about contaminants.

Enrich Life with Flavored Water

What happens after the Mid-Autumn Festival of relaxation, pleasantries, and sweets and the autumn is half over?

The decrease in rainfall becomes visibly noticeable, and the desire to replenish by drinking lots of water increases. While drinking more water is healthy, particularly purified water, plain water – whether room temperature, iced or hot – can become monotonous and uninteresting.

Despite what many people think, there are ways to add flavor to clean, filtered water and still maintain good health. The following are some appealing variations to try.

Tea

One of the most prized characteristics of tea is the array of natural flavors and aromas that can be coaxed from it by adding a sweet fragrance, herb or spice.

Oolong tea
According to Chinese ancient history records, Oolong tea is a warm drink to hydrate the body and prevent dryness. In addition, Oolong tea contains tea polyphenols, iron, calcium, and other minerals that enhance moisturization.

Chrysanthemum tea
At the end of autumn, the temperature difference between day and night is more significant. Since it is common to have symptoms similar to a cold, such as fever and headaches, Chrysanthemum tea is popular for its cooling and calming effect. It also helps reduce inflammation, serves as a good source of vitamins A and C, and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Fruits

Pears
For instance, peeling and cutting pears into small pieces and then boiling them in filtered water is not only healthy, but it helps protect the liver and assist with digestion. Stewed with rock sugar, tea with pears can strengthen the stomach and lungs.

Carambola and oranges
Dicing and boiling with clean filtered water contributes to wellbeing, also. Both fruits provide an array of essential nutrients, including vitamin C, as well as antioxidants. Their multiple health benefits help supplement the body’s water.

Honey

Honey
Honey is a natural sweetener, and tasty when added to warm, purified water. It is particularly healthy when used instead of refined sugar. Since ancient times, honey has been used as both a food and medicine. It is known to heal wounds, keep gums healthy and be an antioxidant linked to reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and some types of cancer.
As you celebrate Nation Day with family, and friends by traveling do not forget to stay well hydrated. Drinking flavored clean water is enriching, refreshing, and healthy.

Life Solutions wishes you a happy holiday!

World Cleanup Day: Let’s do it!

2021 is a difficult year for the world. Although the epidemic in China can be controlled, we will still worry about the recurrence of the epidemic. But in addition, we should not ignore other environmental protection problems facing the earth.

September 19th is the World Cleanup Day. Normally on the third weekend of September every year, world clean day is an international social action committed to dealing with the problem of uncontrolled land garbage and marine garbage in the world through changes affecting human behavior patterns.

In order to practice the concept of environmental protection, we can actively participate in offline activities held by various environmental protection organizations, such as garbage collection activities. We can also reflect the spirit of environmental protection in our daily life like Kevin, the protagonist of the following story, so as to reduce the generation of daily garbage.

  • This is Kevin’s daily routine of the day:

08:00 – Wake up
After washing, he drank the first glass of water of the day(In bottled water and filtered water, he chose the latter because filtered water consumes less energy than bottled water)

Next, he baked bread and fried eggs at home and finished breakfast without plastic waste.

09:00 – Go to work
He didn’t choose to take a taxi on his commute. Instead, he took the subway and bicycle to practice the concept of low-carbon life.

12:00 – Lunch
Kevin took out the lunch box he prepared from home and began to eat lunch instead of ordering takeout, reducing the production of plastic waste.

18:00 – Going home
Kevin went to the supermarket to buy dinner ingredients. When checking out, he chose a shopping bag that can be used many times.

20:00 – Exercising
After dinner, while running at night, he picked up the plastic bottles on the road and threw them into the recyclable dustbin.

21:30 – Relaxing
He sat on the sofa playing with his mobile phone, he cleaned up the files and junk information on his mobile phone. Digital cleaning is also a part of the world cleaning day.

23:00 – Going to sleep
After drinking a glass of filtered water, Kevin took off the fatigue of the day and went to sleep.

The world is drowning in its own waste. However, many people are used to them and even ignore their existence. If you want to do something constructive, change your daily habits first! Start with small things, from bottled water to filtered water, from plastic bags to environmentally friendly bags, from takeout to cooking, and so on.

World clean-up day can not only be the third weekend of September but also world clean-up day every day as long as less garbage is produced every day.

The End of Heat and the Importance of Water

Based on the changes of the sun’s position in the zodiac throughout the year, the “24 solar terms” are an important type of calendar in China. Indicating different periods of seasons, the changes of weather, and some natural phenomena, they were developed by farmers in ancient times for the purpose of guiding agriculture and farming activities.

The number of terms is associated with 24 equal periods of the year according to the position of the sun.

The End of Heat period, which falls in the Autumn season on August 23, is when the hot summer is ending and the heat subsides. With the Rain Water period, when the amount of rainwater increases, not expected until Spring season, it is important for people to pay attention to water storage and prevent “Autumn Dryness”.

With the exception of South China and Southwest China, the rainy season ends and the precipitation gradually decreases. Particularly in North China, Northeast China, and Northwest China, lack of water is a concern.

Water scarcity is a result of rapid population, industrialization growth, climate change, and widespread pollution. Despite being unevenly distributed throughout China, the limited quantity makes it difficult to supply enough consumable water. It has been an ongoing challenge for the country. To address water shortages, China has implemented substantial water projects like the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which moves water from rivers in the South to the dry areas in the North. However, this project is years from completion.

To help improve the supply of water, particularly consumable water, efforts are underway to address water pollution and environmental issues. These include policies for reducing single-use plastics (including straws) and banning non-degradable plastic bags. These initiatives are important to prevent water waste and combat pollution, improving droughts in parts of China and making consumable clean water more available throughout the country.

And this is also what we would like to see Shanghai and other Chinese cities have the cleanest and most accessible water in Asia. Through our water filtration systems, dedicated services and educational initiatives, we provide our clients and beneficiaries with clean water and improve their water security.

Life Solutions: A Reverse Osmosis for Young People

International Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 12th. Designated by the United Nations in 1999, its purpose is to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.

This year’s theme, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health,” focuses on the participation of young people to achieve global success of this effort. According to the United Nations’ website, “It has been acknowledged that there is a need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.

Life Solutions is committed to young, aspiring professionals and believes that a supportive internship program is essential for them to explore their talents and gain opportunities for employment. Like tap water that needs to be filtered, interns at Life Solutions learn how to cultivate and implement their innovative ideas.

Employees help them hone their concepts and skills by teaching and guiding them while they retain their uniqueness. It is similar to how reverse osmosis effectively removes pollutants while retaining the beneficial minerals in the water. Just as Life Solutions turns tap water into clean water, it encourages young professionals to convert ideas into results.

Internship program
Life Solutions’ internship program has been ongoing for a number of reasons.

Youth empowerment and Social Responsibility
Firstly, it is about helping young professionals find passion and careers. The company believes their internship program not only helps students build a resume, but also creates opportunities for their future. Internships enhance skills and fuel desires to learn, enabling students to realize their interest and potential.

Cultural Diversity
Additionally, internships promote cultural diversity. Life Solutions is part of Waterloo Works, a collaborative project of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. This partnership brings diverse human resources and experiences to everyone involved. While the interns learn how to do business in China, Life Solutions’ employees learn from new ideas.

Unique Perspectives
Lastly, Life Solutions’ internship program promotes diversity and supports the company’s core values. Interns with different cultural backgrounds add value to the company’s work through their unique perspectives and generational differences give rise to new, original concepts.

Internship Experiences

Life Solutions is a great example of how a medium sized company can find its niche in the massive China market, and how local and foreign team members can collaborate and build a strong culture. I interned there for two months through July and August 2018.
This offered me the opportunity to hone my skills as a content creator, but moreover I learned so much about the field of sustainability in practice. While locally staffed, our clients are huge international corporations, big brands and sustainability partners. This opened up opportunities to meet and network with professional people across Shanghai.

——Tristan Lin

All in all, Life Solutions’ internship programs benefits both the young, aspiring professionals as well as the company and its employees. It’s a win-win program.

Corporate Social Responsibility Has Merit in Many Ways

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) allows businesses of all sizes to endorse positive change. When companies choose to do what is right, it not only benefits their bottom line but it builds trust with their clients and impacts the greater good. When people use a product or service of a socially responsible company, they believe they are doing their part to make a difference.

CSR can refer to any effort to improve a company’s eco-friendliness and increase its social impact. Regardless of the undertaking, it helps build trust, raise awareness and encourage social change. Often, the more socially responsible the company, the more supportive the clients, consumers, and community. While thousands of companies are doing their part in a variety of ways, these initiatives overall have far-reaching results that are impacting major world issues, ranging from hunger and health to human rights and global warming.

Life Solutions is one such company doing CSR successfully. Specializing in the filtration and purification of water, they are committed to continually learning and sharing information about water quality, energy efficiency, and the impact of the plastics industry on global pollution in the Asia-Pacific region to be socially responsible. It is part of their overall social impact strategy – to give back, share and exchange knowledge in order to support a healthier, more environmentally sustainable planet.

Educational Seminars
They do this by providing educational lectures and seminars for
> Customers
> Charities
> Schools
> Social enterprises

Life Solutions China Co-Founder and Managing Director Jon Newton has been giving lectures across the country for more than 10 years. As a recognized expert, he ensures he continually advances his understanding of water shortages and the disruptive impact that pollution and waste have on health, ecosystems, and the environment. Then, he conveys this information to Life Solutions’ commercial and residential customers, employees and suppliers as well as volunteer organizations and the public throughout China to broaden their awareness.

Other leaders at Life Solutions give regular talks to encourage the public to participate in water conservation, understand the benefits of choosing water purification and foster proactive interest in sustainable development.

These educational lectures and seminars help the company develop new technologies and solutions that address these issues while actively influencing China’s transition to clean and healthy drinking water. Not only does it help improve Life Solutions’ products and services, but it allows them to be part of the broader conversation around social responsiveness, sustainability and healthy living.

With a focus on water contamination, scarcity and pollution, Life Solutions’ CSR efforts are supporting their corporate mission to promote China’s transition to high-quality, healthy drinking water. By using corporate social responsibility to protect the environment and improve the quality of life for the communities they impact every day, Life Solutions is making a difference.

Plastic Bag Free Day: Small Efforts Add Up to Big Differences

Most people use plastic bags every day. Whether shopping for groceries or a new pair of jeans, most likely the retailers are placing their goods in plastic bags. While plastic bags may seem necessary for shopping, they are a big strain on the environment. It can take up to 500 years for plastic bags to disintegrate, which means they are a large part of landfills and contribute to polluting waterways, destroying wildlife, and harming human health.

International Plastic Bag Free Day, celebrated on July 3 this year, is a worldwide initiative that strives to heighten awareness of the damage caused by plastic bags and to eliminate the use of them. Plastic pollution is a global catastrophe that is man-made and part of the reason the ecosystems are suffering. Hundreds of marine mammals and sea bird species are known to have ingested marine plastic. Still, more have become entangled in plastic.

Additionally, plastic pollution is dangerous because it transports invasive species, which can have adverse effects on biodiversity. People are not immune from the impact either. Plastic particles in the ocean attract toxins, which enter the food chain and can lead to poor health.

Small efforts add up to big differences.

International Plastic Bag Free Day is an opportunity to consider that every plastic bag used and disposed of affects the world for generations to come. Created to get rid of the plastic bags around the world for environmental conservation, International Plastic Bag Free Day encourages eliminating them for more eco-friendly alternatives.

Every action, regardless of how big or small, helps. Some countries have taken bold steps and opted for bans on plastic bags, like China, Israel, South Africa, Italy and Rwanda. Some companies have initiated their own programs to contribute to the cause.

Life Solutions, a leading sustainable company responsible for providing clean, safe, and healthy drinking water through water filtration systems is one such example.

Through its Yangtze River Plastic Recycling program at Wusong Pao Taiwan Wetland Forest Park in the Baoshan District, a protected area located in the last section of the Yangtze River Delta, Life Solution employees volunteered their time recycling plastic. In cooperation with the Green Initiative, this recycling effort actively contributed to protecting rivers, marine life and ecosystems overall. By doing social impact work and sharing the importance of being socially responsible, they helped to make a difference.

Every day millions of plastic bags get used and discarded. Without countries, organizations and people getting involved now there will be hundreds of millions of pounds of plastic clogging oceans and rivers in the future. Choosing paper or cloth over plastic bags – even for one day – makes a difference. If the use of plastic bags can be eliminated on this one day, it can be done throughout the year. And as a result of this continuous effect, the dangers associated with plastic bags, like the harm they have on marine life, animal life, and nature, can be reduced.

A Workplace Evolution

Workplace Changes offer Opportunities to Design for the Future

Many of you may still remember when offices used to be row upon row of desks, or when cubicles were popular in the 1980s and 1990s…

In those days, health and safety, workplace comfort, environmental sustainability, and thoughtful experience design were yet to be considered. Compared with the high quality, sustainable and human-centered designs of today, few people would want to return to those types of workplaces now.

We spend most of our adult life, so it makes sense to design spaces that are healthy, safe, and comfortable with low environmental footprint. These new design trends often include collaborative workspaces or ensuring that pantry and kitchen areas are spacious, organized, and fit-out to meet the needs of staff, customers, and other visitors. Whether the designs have been driven by innovating clients and designers, or demographic changes, the modern-day workplace can create value well beyond just ROI.

Pioneering companies and designers have the led the way in the evolution of the modern day office.

For over 10 years, Life Solutions have been working with interior designers, architects, and project and facility managers to ensure that end users have what they need in their offices. We offer both traditional stand-alone and counter-top water filtration systems [link to classic systems webpage] as well as innovative, excellent quality Billi taps for premium offices, hotels, hospitals, serviced apartments and private homes.

We would be happy to speak with you about how we can help you to build the workplaces of tomorrow in China.

World Oceans Day is
a Reminder of the Greater Good

The United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day every year on June 8. The purpose of this Day is to inform people around the world about how their actions impact the ocean, gain support to protect the ocean, and encourage proactive management of the world’s oceans.

Despite their vastness and awe-inspiring beauty, oceans play a key role in everyday life. They sustain the planet, are a major source of food and medicine, and are a critical part of the biosphere.

This year, the theme for World Oceans Day 2021 is The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods. Hand in hand with this highlighted topic are intentions to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources by 2030. The focus is to help understand the wonder of oceans and how they are a life source that supports humans as well as every organism on Earth.

Lately, the threat and consequences of global warming and climate change have given a more significant and renewed appreciation for the planet’s oceans and marine life. To convey the importance of oceans, consider these figures:

Oceans account for more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. The majority of the Earth’s surface consumed by ocean reveals how vital marine environments are to the planet.

With much of the Earth’s surface underwater, marine species make up more than 90 percent of the planet’s living species, outnumbering those on land.

According to the World Register of Marine Species, there are more than 240,000 accepted species and new marine life is discovered every day.

More than 70 percent of the planet’s oxygen is produced by the ocean, specifically marine plants, and algae.

With World Oceans Day comes a collective duty to raise global awareness of the benefits derived from oceans and use its resources sustainably. Life Solutions is doing its part to contribute. Besides having a corporate responsibility to clients and society to provide safe and clean drinking water to people in China, the company’s mission and values include a responsibility to sustain the environment. Their social impact work in and out of the office is making a big difference.

When clients buy and use their clean water delivery systems, Life Solutions is making a positive impact. Not only are our system energy-efficient, but we avoid using plastic drinking bottles that use more energy and water to produce. Also, plastic drinking bottles do not decompose, making them an environmental hazard and a waste of valuable resources.

Yangtze River Plastic Pick Up

Additionally, Life Solutions makes a social impact by collaborating with partners on projects and programs that benefit society, such as their Meatless Monday and Paperback Programs. We conduct educational seminars that provide understanding based on evidence and experience. Our hands-on work, like participating in the Yangtze River Plastic Pick Up and donating water filtration systems and ongoing maintenance services to charities for access to clean drinking water, directly impacts people as well as the environment.

Most importantly, Life Solutions recognizes the importance of doing right in today’s global, dynamic and complex world. We continue to learn, grow and contribute in areas that are relevant for improving overall health, water security, and water quality. And, this is consistent with what World Oceans Day strives to achieve each year.
