Building a Fairer, Healthier World-World Health Day

On April 7th every year, the World Health Organization – a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health – chooses a specific theme to highlight. The theme, which has included universal health coverage, depression, diabetes, and health safety in the past, sets the tone for the world stage. This year’s focus for World Health Day is “to build a fairer, healthier world”.

Chosen with the recent pandemic top of mind, this topic reminds everyone that the world is not equal. As the COVID-19 coronavirus has demonstrated, some people have better access to health care than others just because of their circumstances – like where they live, how old they are, and their ethnic background. Around the world, people have struggled with low income, unsatisfactory housing, no education, lack of health care, and scarce employment. Additionally, factors like gender inequality, safe environments, clean water and air, and food security have contributed to this imbalance. As a result, there has been illness that was avoidable, needless suffering, and unnecessary deaths.

While COVID-19 has impacted all countries, its effect has been harshest on communities that were already vulnerable, particularly those more exposed to the disease, those less likely to have access to quality health care, and those more likely to experience adverse consequences due to efforts to contain the pandemic.

This disparity is unfair, but it can be prevented. For this reason, World Health Day this year is appealing to leaders to help ensure that everyone has wholesome living and working conditions. Also, leaders are urged to monitor health inequities and make sure everyone is able to access quality care whenever and wherever they need it.

In connection with this year’s World Health Day theme, having access to clean water is one of the simplest ways for many people to stay healthy. Clean water provides nourishment. Since the human body consists mostly of water, adequate hydration is necessary for bodily systems to function. It helps maintain organs and enables the blood to flow freely and transport oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Importantly, it helps the body get rid of toxins developed from bodily reactions, obtained from outside sources, or due to the consumption of tainted water.

Clean water also prevents diseases. Many fatal medical conditions, like cholera and typhoid, occurred because contaminated water was consumed. Clean water eliminates many risks associated with water from sewage and contaminated sites like industries.
In addition, clean water is essential for agriculture and food production. If crops and grains are produced with contaminated water, the bacteria and disease spreads to those who consume them. This is why clean water is needed for sanitation purposes as well. When people do not clean themselves or their clothes with clean water, or cook food with contaminated water, it contributes to more disease and illness.

Although having access to clean water is just one important way to support good health, every bit contributes to building a fairer and healthier world.

World Water Day Advocates for a Vital Resource

World Water Day is an annual observance of the importance of clean water. Taking place on March 22, World Water Day strives to raise awareness of the benefits of water, acknowledge the seriousness of the global water crisis, and advocate for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.

Water, a substance often taken for granted, is a vital resource with wide-reaching benefits that span food, health, cleanliness, culture, and safety of natural environments and habitation. It is unique because it is the only natural substance found in all three physical states of liquid, solid, and gas. Additionally, it is sometimes referred to as the “universal solvent” since it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. When water flows, whether it is through the ground or through people’s bodies, it takes with it chemicals, minerals, and nutrients.

World Water Day was introduced nearly 30 years ago at the United Nations Conference for Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. However, it was not officially observed until the following year. It supports the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030. To achieve this important goal and make it a priority around the globle, the United Nations declared the 10-year period from 2018 to 2028 to be Water Action Decade.

As World Water Day aims to spread awareness about the ongoing water crisis worldwide and the benefits of clean water, it encourages communities to take action to resolve it. Everyone can contribute to making a difference.

Filtering water is one of the most effective ways to confront the water crisis. Not only does it provide clean, healthy water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, but it prevents waste. Rather than “flushing” water to reduce contaminants, options like clean drinking water solutions or water filtration products can purify water by removing pollutants.

They can include carbon charcoal filters in a pitcher or as part of a faucet-mount, ultraviolet light units or reverse osmosis, water distillers, or another form of water treatment process.

All Life Solutions’ filtration products are CCC (3C) certified and exceed the CJ94-2005 Chinese water industry standard for drinking water purification. We use NSF-certified water filters in all our RO products.

Water filtration has other benefits as well, like eliminating the need for bottled water and water delivery services, and protecting the environment from damage caused by plastic water bottles. Furthermore, it prevents additional contamination from overworked water treatment facilities that are unable to handle the influx of contaminated water. By filtering water, less contaminants pollute the public water supply. Life Solutions’ water filtration systems for potable water and other commercial water applications are ideal for producing clean water that removes contaminants and helps to protect the environment.

Here Comes the Spring!

As the flowers begin blooming and the birds start chirping with the approach of spring, many people set out plans for cleaning the house to freshen it after facing the winter blues. Spring cleaning is an annual tradition that allows people to wash, tidy and revive their homes to get a head start on the upcoming season.

Although it can seem like a daunting undertaking, it does not have to be. Many people approach the spring-cleaning process room by room, deep cleaning areas neglected over the winter, organizing messes, and getting rid of clutter. Others sort belongings into categories, such as give away, store, put away or trash, to make the task more manageable. Once organized, they often remove these belongings by donating them to charity or planning a yard sale.

After months of hibernation due to the cold weather, it is just as important to clean the exterior parts of the home in addition to the interior. Seasonal chores for the spring involve washing patio furniture, awnings, and outsides of windows. Other preparation for the spring often includes maintenance projects, like repaving surfaces of driveways and backyard patios, inspecting outdoor structures for damage, and repairing loose fence boards and missing shingles. Still, other projects pertain to the turf, like gathering fallen branches and removing plants that did not survive. For many, this spring-cleaning process is twofold: restore aesthetic appeal and promote longevity.

These days, however, cleaning habits for welcoming the spring after a long winter go beyond washing and maintaining the interior and exterior of homes, and removing clutter. It has extended to new practices like checking and replacing the water system to ensure the drinking water is clean. Healthy living is top of mind for most people, and water is the leading source of nutrition. When properly hydrated, people can maintain good health and be safe from disease. In addition to drinking, clean water is also needed for cooking, cleaning, and other practices that are a central to daily living.

Hines China understands the importance of this. With clean drinking water supplied through Life Solutions’ Billi water filtration systems, their tenants are able to enjoy fresh water with their morning tea or coffee, or with a cold glass of water in the afternoon. According to the company, the filtered drinking water system is a first-rate way to provide the entire office with water that is clean and healthy. As a bonus, it has enabled them to use reusable cups, which are more sustainable and eliminate the use of plastic bottles in the office.

The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI, which is leading the global WELL movement to transform buildings and communities into places that help people thrive, is focused on clean water and wellness also. Since water forms one of the pillars of the WELL rating framework and Life Solutions’ Billi is a leading system for fresh drinking water, it is not surprising that it has become a Cornerstone Member of IWBI.

As spring arrives, establishing new habits besides washing and decluttering homes has new meaning when considering the importance of clean water and good health. With spring cleaning blooms self-care opportunities, and fresh water is a wonderful way to stay healthy. Enjoy a happy and healthy spring!

A Happy (and Healthy)
Chinese New Year at Home

On the last working day of each year, we at Life Solutions organize our annual dinner. In contrast to our previous gatherings at restaurants due to the COVID pandemic. This year we celebrated “on the spot”!

Chinese New Year is right around the corner. As everyone prepares to celebrate with food, fruit, and sweets, it is easy to forget that it is the third holiday of feasting, following the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Just weeks apart, most people have not yet focused on their resolutions, which often involve losing weight, maintaining good health, and spending more time on hobbies. This year is especially unforgiving due to the pandemic and the government’s advice to limit travel and to stay at home. Although it may be more difficult to take part in activities this season, annual Spring Festival traditions will still be enjoyed.

With that, it is important to stay physically and mentally fit. Instead of being hindered by the virus outbreak and overwhelmed by declarations to eat less and exercise more, Lunar New Year can be an opportunity for people to rebalance their mind, body, and spirit. A centuries-old approach, the idea is to focus on the “whole self,” specifically physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. And it can be done anywhere, even at home.

Good eating habits

Staying physically and mentally fit for personal health and happiness often involves diet plans and exercise regimens. While trying to lose weight with strict constraints can be challenging, swapping sweets for healthier snacks like nuts and cutting calories with fewer drinks can make dieting more manageable. Importantly, it is necessary to indulge a little. Having a treat helps sustain good eating habits.

Exercise

In addition to eating well, exercise is important to stay fit. Whether the activity is jogging, kick-boxing or yoga, a regular exercise routine will make it easier to carry on during Chinese New Year. Many of these activities can be done at home. Other activities involve the home, such as cleaning in preparation for the holiday. Housework can be part of an exercise routine. Dusting, vacuuming and scrubbing can increase heart rate as well as tone arms and legs. Listening to dance music and adding Zumba moves while housekeeping can make it more fun.

More moderate ways of exercising can contribute to mental fitness, as well. Tai chi, which combines stretching and mindfulness, improves balance and builds stamina. Qigong enhances the connection between the mind, body, and spirit with meditation and controlled breathing. Besides improving flexibility and muscle strength, it helps manage tension and anxiety. Neither practice requires special equipment and can easily be performed at home.

Spiritual health

Lastly, paying attention to spiritual health, is another important aspect to staying physically and mentally fit. Although it is intangible, this energy helps people rebalance themselves, contributing to overall health and happiness. Some of the simplest ways to stimulate emotional experiences is to engage in activities that are refreshing and recharging. These can be done at home, like reconnecting with old friends and partaking in favorite pastimes like reading or cooking.

The Health Benefits of Drinking Water

After indulging during the holiday season, many people focus on healthier diets at the start of the new year. Diets come in all shapes and sizes. Some are complex, some are simple, and some are just fads. Whether it involves exercising, monitoring portion control, eliminating sugar and carbohydrates, or eating every other day, the one constant for weight loss is drinking water.

Water is an important part of dieting because of its health benefits. Along with good nutrition and exercise, water is essential for digestion and elimination. It helps remove toxins, carry nutrients to cells, and prevent dehydration, which is all necessary for healthy weight loss. Additionally, it assists the body in metabolizing and burning fat. Since it does not contain calories, fat, or cholesterol, and is low in sodium, water is a natural appetite suppressant.

How exactly is water effective in losing weight? Metabolizing fat is a primary function of the liver. Since the liver is unable to perform at its peak when helping the kidneys function, less body fat is digested and more is stored. Without sufficient water, the liver cannot be productive and break down fat efficiently, causing it to be stored in the body.

This leads to weight gain and water retention. When the body does not get enough water, it retains what it has and stores it. When the body gets a sufficient supply of water, it releases the water it has been holding since there is no longer a reason to store it. Thus, to reduce fat and lose weight, plenty of clean water is needed to maintain kidney and liver functions.

How much water is needed?

Research shows that it is essential to drink at least eight glasses of water a day or one cup (200~250ml/per cup) for every 20 pounds of body weight to maintain optimum health. When dieting and exercising, more water is needed to replenish the water lost while working out. Most importantly, it should be pure water. While coffee, tea, fruit juice, and other beverages consist mainly of water, the body needs pure water to fully hydrate and rid the body of toxins. The color of urine is an ideal indicator of the body’s hydration. The paler the color the more hydrated; the darker the color the more dehydrated.

Click the image to find out more about The Economic Value of Clean Drinking Water Solutions

Besides successful dieting, the health benefits of drinking clean water go well beyond hydration and weight loss. Water plays a key role in overall wellbeing, because it contributes to how every cell, tissue, and organ in the body functions. Studies report that people can live for weeks without food, but just a few days without water because the body is made up of approximately 60% water. Additionally, being dehydrated affects people physically as well as mentally. Good hydration acts as a fuel for energy, stamina, and memory, which ultimately leads to a healthier and happier life.

As people increase their water intake for personal weight loss, nutrition, and overall good health, they should be conscious of the impact it could have on the environment. Large amounts of consumer plastics, like plastic water bottles, contaminate the marine environment every day, harming water supplies and water quality. Pollution has become one of the most widespread problems for the world’s ocean and waterways. By recycling plastic water bottles, reducing waste by using products with less packaging, and choosing reusable items over disposable ones, people can maintain good health for themselves as well as for the environment.

The Importance of National Bird Day

National Bird Day is a relatively new day in honor of birds. Founded by the Avian Welfare Coalition in 2002 and commemorated on January 5th each year, it raises awareness of the hardships and difficulties these essential animals face. Every year, millions of birds are captured from the wild or produced in captivity for commercial profit or enjoyment. They are forced to live in conditions that do not accommodate their instinctive physical and behavioral needs, and prevented from contributing to the environment.

While birds are as fascinating as beautiful and many people enjoy the hobby of birdwatching, they are a large animal species that has become endangered today as a result of illegal pet trade, disease, and habitat loss. Besides trying to alleviate suffering from insensitive bird trade, cruel breeding mills, and poor care in captivity, it is important to support birds for their role in the earth’s health.

There are more than 9,000 species of birds, and they are often valuable indicators of environmental conditions and the vitality of ecosystems. Birds have long been considered a keystone species since their presence affects other species. For example, the holes left behind by woodpeckers are often used as shelter for other animals. Just as woodpeckers are dependent on certain trees, other animals are dependent on their pecking. Birds also help maintain population levels of their prey and predators. Even when they die, they provide food for scavengers and decomposers. Additionally, birds provide critical resources for their many parasites, including lice that eat their feathers, flies that live on them, and mites that travel on them from plant to plant and even country to country.

Besides playing a critical role in the functioning of ecosystems, birds contribute in ways that impact the health of people, the economy, and food production. Studies have shown that birds eat millions of tons of insects a year. In China, much of the nourishment of the House Swift Apus nipalensis consists of agricultural pests. In the Americas, the Evening Grosbeak Hesperiphona vespertine helps control outbreaks of the Spruce Budworm. In Europe, bird nests are used for pest control. Bird pollinators, like hummingbirds and honeyeaters, are impactful in high altitudes and hot climates. In South Africa, some plants pollinated by birds are used for food and medicine. As scavengers, their speedy arrival and efficiency helps control the spread of diseases, like rabies, typically transmitted by feral dogs or rats.

Birds also transform landscapes by maintaining essential balance in habitats like forests, marshes, and grasslands, which is necessary as they store carbon, oxygenate the air, and transform pollutants into nutrients. Birds also act as messengers about the earth’s health. Since they are widespread and respond quickly to changes in the environment, they provide early-warning signs for pressing concerns such as climate change.

Clearly, birds play an essential role in environmental conditions, functioning of ecosystems, and human health. By raising awareness of the issues that birds encounter and promoting change to ensure their wellbeing and value, they can continue to have a positive impact overall. This makes National Bird Day worthwhile.

The Tradition of New Year’s Resolutions

Once everyone is done with their year-end reflection for the year that is ending, it is time to look ahead to the year that is about to start. Besides festive countdown parties, the iconic ball drop at Times Square in New York, fireworks, and champagne toasts, for many people welcoming in the New Year means creating New Year’s resolutions. This is because the beginning of the year offers a clean slate and the opportunity to start fresh. So what is behind resolutions and why are they so important?

The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates back centuries, even before the emperor Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar and established January as the first day of the year in honor of the month’s namesake Janus. This mythical god of early Rome had two faces – one looking forward and one looking backward – which allowed him to look back on the past and forward to the future. As the Romans celebrated this newly-dated holiday, they made promises to this important god to be blessed in the year ahead.

Today, resolutions come in many forms. Some people make a promise to change a bad habit or begin a healthier lifestyle like quitting smoking and losing weight. Other people make a promise to develop a new habit like starting an exercise program, volunteering in their community, or being more diligent in protecting the environment.

At Life Solutions, we continue to deepen our understanding of water risks and scarcity and to share our knowledge with people across China.
(click the image to read more)

Studies find that the most common resolutions include to exercise more, lose weight, quit smoking, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, and save more money. While these revolve around a personal or physical change, other resolutions are more reflective in nature such as living life to the fullest, being more grateful, and spending more time with family and friends. Still others have a broader focus like volunteering to help the less fortunate, which provides a more profound sense of purpose.

Life Solutions- “the earth’s health is our health”
(click the image to read more)

As people reflect at New Year’s and promise to make changes regarding how they treat themselves and the people around them, they also consider environmental-friendly resolutions this time of year. By vowing to cut back on waste by reducing, reusing, and recycling, they are improving the environment not only for themselves but everyone else around them. Some of the more common resolutions around protecting the environment include going paperless, starting a compost, conserving water and energy, banning styrofoam, and recycling paper and plastic.

Life Solutions partnered with Green Initiatives to learn about preserving the local environment.
(click the images to read more)

Despite the goal and the good intentions behind setting resolutions, people often struggle to stick to them throughout the year. There are many reasons for this with the most frequent being that the resolutions are too general, making them unmanageable and difficult to reach. To ensure resolutions do not fall by the wayside, people should make sure they are achievable, turn them into habits, and remember that they take time to accomplish.

To be successful with their New Year’s resolutions, experts advise people to start small, write themselves reminders, change behaviors and vary routines, track their progress, set rewards, and stay focused. Most importantly, they should remember that slip-ups happen, and when they do they should just get back on track.

New Year’s resolutions and promises people make for the new year are part of the holiday’s tradition. Regardless of what resolutions are committed to, the ultimate goal is to improve life in a meaningful way in the coming year.

Happy New Year!

World Immunization Day-The Importance of Vaccines and More

Immunization saves millions of lives each year and vaccines play a major role. Yet, there are still hundreds of thousands of unvaccinated and under-vaccinated people.

World Immunization Day, recently celebrated on November 15, aims to make everyone aware about the importance of getting timely vaccinations against vaccine-preventable diseases.

With the current coronavirus pandemic continuing to affect millions of people around the world, knowledge about vaccines for protection from rapidly spreading infectious diseases is more important than ever. Although a vaccine for COVID-19 is not yet widely available, there are vaccines for many other highly contagious and deadly diseases. And these vaccines are a safe and effective way to save lives, prevent outbreaks, and maintain overall health.

Over the years there has been much confusion about vaccines. Despite any misunderstandings, vaccinations are an important part of worldwide health because they prevent the spread of contagious and dangerous diseases. These include measles, mumps, polio, chickenpox, whooping cough, and diphtheria. While some diseases are mild, like cold viruses, others can cause life-altering changes and result in death, like smallpox.

To fully realize the significance of vaccines, which World Immunization Day strives to do, it is necessary to understand what a vaccine is and how it works. A vaccine or immunization builds people’s natural immunity to a disease before they get sick, and keeps them from getting a disease and spreading it to others. For most vaccines, a weakened form of the disease is injected into people’s body through a shot in the arm or leg so they can produce antibodies to fight against it. These antibodies last a long time and continue to fight off the disease if ever exposed to it again.

Aside from smallpox, all other diseases are still active in some part of the world. If diseases come back. If people stopped getting vaccines, the diseases would come back and there would be epidemics like there were decades ago. For example, it happened in Japan in the 1970s with whooping cough. Despite about two-thirst of Japanese children receiving a vaccination and few cases of the disease in 1974, rumors started claiming that the vaccine was unsafe and not needed. Just two years later, the vaccination rate for whooping cough dropped to about 10% and by 1979 there was an epidemic with more than 13,000 cases. Once vaccination rates improved, the number of cases declined.

During a challenging time like today’s global pandemic, supporting people’s wellness through a healthy immune system is essential. Just as vaccines help with healthy immune systems, so does clean water because it works as an immune system booster and contributes to improved health and overall well-being. Water helps carry oxygen throughout the body, which contributes to a properly functioning system. It also helps remove toxins from the body, which helps prevent them from building up and negatively impacting the immune system. Additionally, small modifications, like adding lemon or drinking tea, can enhance the benefits of water. Lemons are a good source of vitamin C, which helps prevent disease and fight against the common cold. Tea provides antioxidants that can help protect against sickness. Besides drinking, another benefit of clean water is that it can be used to wash away germs that may lead to unwellness.

Both vaccines and clean water are vital to overall health. Getting vaccines to fight off and prevent the spread of dangerous diseases, and drinking clean water to stay hydrated and help ensure the body is functioning optimally are both important and necessary ways for people to maintain a healthy immune system and stay well.
