The Effects of Water on the Perfect Cup of Tea

The history of tea dates back to ancient China. According to the legend, Emperor Shen Nung discovered tea when leaves from a tree blew into his pot of boiling water. Intrigued by the scent, he drank the brew and was delighted by the warm feeling he experienced.

Today, not only is the tea an integral part of Chinese culture, but people all over the world drink the aromatic beverage. And for good reason since studies show that tea soothes nerves, enhances relaxation and supports wellbeing.

While the quality of tea leaves is an important part of making the perfect cup of tea, water is the major ingredient that influences the aroma and taste of tea. Therefore, it is important to brew tea with quality water. Quality water is water that clear, purified and fresh. It does not have a smell and it does not have an aftertaste.

Different types of water will have different effects on tea

1. Tap Water
Tap water, which is readily available, comes from rivers and lakes. Despite being processed, it is hard water and contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. These minerals impart a bitter flavor, altering the tea’s natural flavor. Soft water, on the other hand, contains fewer minerals and has little effect on the taste of tea.

2. Deep groundwater
Deep groundwater is suitable for brewing tea, too. Unlike shallow groundwater it is not tainted from pollution since it is protected by a top layer of water. However, deep groundwater can be difficult to find.

3. Pure water
Pure water, which is water that meets the sanitary standards for drinking water by appropriate processing methods, is readily available and top quality, which makes it ideal for brewing tea. It is clean, clear and uncontaminated. Additionally, the freshness of pure water enriches the flavor of tea.
