Water Scarcity in China

Water supports a country’s development, and China is no exception.

Despite being the world’s fastest-growing economy for years, China has been facing a serious water issue. The problem stems from rapid population and industrialization growth, which have spurred the need for water. With climate change and widespread water pollution contributing to the problem, water is scarce and unevenly distributed throughout the country. The combination of limited quantity, changing conditions, and pollution is making it difficult for China to supply enough consumable water to some provinces. About half of the country’s large cities, including Beijing, face a water shortage.

Yangtze River Plastic Pick Up

Water scarcity in China has been an ongoing challenge for the country. Lenient environmental controls have led to poor water quality and extensive pollution. Although factories are often located on river banks for water supply, the lack of water treatment plants results in wastewater being released back into the rivers without being treated. Besides industrial pollution, land use and degradation contributes to the pollution in China’s water. Fertilizers, pesticides, and animal waste is carried into lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. Also, aquifers are impacted as rainfall and melted snow transport pollutants underground. As a result, most groundwater in urban areas is contaminated and cannot be consumed.

To address the limited supply of water, China has implemented substantial water projects. The most well-known, the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, involves moving water from rivers in the South to the dry areas in the North that have dense population, industry, and agriculture. First proposed by the late Chairman Mao Zedong in 1952, the project was approved by the State Council in 2002 following much research and planning. Once completed, it will link China’s four main rivers – the Yangtze, Yellow River, Huaihe, and Haihe – and disperse water through three diversion routes, stretching south to north across the eastern, central, and western parts of the country.

Despite the importance, need, and benefits of this project, it is years from completion, generating new environmental concerns, and not contributing to resolving China’s immediate issue of water scarcity. To help improve the supply of consumable water in the short-term, it is necessary to prevent water pollution and tackle environmental issues. Cleaning up China’s rivers and lakes is not an easy undertaking. Industrial growth over the years has caused cities throughout China to be blanketed in smog. And, both are continually raising concerns about the safety of food and population health.

Air pollution in Hongkong

However, efforts are already underway. Earlier this year, The National Development and Reform Commission issued a new policy – to be implemented over the next five years – that reduces single-use plastics across the country, including straws by the end of this year. Non-degradable plastic bags will be banned in major cities by the end of 2020 and in all cities by 2022, with the exception of markets selling fresh produce that are exempt until 2025. Additionally, restaurants will need to reduce the use of single-use plastic items by 30% and hotels will no longer be able to offer free single-use plastic items by 2025.

Initiatives like these that help manage water waste and widespread pollution can contribute to improving water scarcity in China and eventually lead to more consumable water throughout the country.

Life Solutions: The Earth’s Health is Our Health

Life Solutions is a service company that specializes in the filtration and purification of water. It supplies, installs, and maintains water filtration systems for potable and washing water. With offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong as well as dedicated service centers in Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Macau, Life Solutions services clients in more than 25 Chinese cities.

Although the company’s business is impressive and admirable, what makes it special is its mission: “To inspire China’s transition to clean and healthy drinking water through outstanding customer service and environmentally friendly solutions.”

Life Solutions wants to make safe drinking water available to as many people in China as possible while eliminating damaging environmental effects and pollution caused by the plastic bottled water industry.

In tandem with this mission are the company’s core values that guide its actions and makes it so successful. These values, decided by Life Solutions’ team members across all of their offices and services centers, are:

  • Respect all
  • The earth’s health is our health
  • Health and safety first
  • Teamwork
  • Be attentive to the needs of our customers

While all of these values are important, the one that stands out from the others is the focus on the environment – “the earth’s health is our health” – meaning that safeguarding people’s health starts with a healthy earth.

It may not be obvious, but the environment impacts water quality and people in many ways. For example, common environmental pollutants like lead can leak into water through old pipes and cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system. The chemical Bisphenol A (also known as BPA) used to make plastic water bottles increases the risk of cancer. Biological contaminants like solid waste and fertilizers can cause bacteria that make oceans unsafe, causing illnesses to people in contact with them. Additionally, man-made products like gasoline and oil can get into the groundwater, making it unsafe for people to consume or use.

Although people can exercise regularly, make good choices about nutrition, and get regular medical check-ups, well-being suffers when living in a toxic environment. By sharing how the planet impacts personal health, how bottled water creates unnecessary pollution, and how filtered water makes sustainable drinking water readily available, Life Solutions is doing its part to better society and preserve the welfare of the earth and people.

A healthy earth benefits everyone. To make this known is not only one of Life Solutions guiding principles, but it is what gives them great pleasure, satisfaction, and profound sense of accomplishment.

Everyone Can Learn from World Teachers’ Day

Learning can be defined as acquiring knowledge and skills through actual experience and studying. It is important because it improves awareness, understanding, and abilities that help people better themselves and reach personal goals. Learning often comes from being taught by teachers whose primary role is to provide this knowledge and skills. The information they impart, which spans basic facts, job skills, and cultural norms and values, is essential for improving people’s lives and helping societies operate efficiently. Much of the development and future of any nation depends upon teachers.

World Teachers’ Day, which is October 5th every year, celebrates teachers. Also known as International Teachers’ Day, it commemorates the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which focuses on the status and situations of teachers around the world. This includes standards for education personnel policy, recruitment, and training as well as the continuing education, employment, working time, and conditions of teachers. The holiday aims to improve educators, assess issues related to teaching, and advance appreciation for this critical job.

Acknowledging the far-reaching, long-term impact of teachers, he said, “Education is essential to eliminating gender inequality, reducing poverty, creating a sustainable planet, and fostering peace. In the knowledge economy, education is the new currency by which nations maintain economic competitiveness and global prosperity. On World Teachers’ Day, we recognize that our great teachers make these goals possible.

With World Teachers’ Day comes a reminder not only for the respect and admiration of teachers internationally but for the importance of being educated in current and varied topics. This year’s theme is “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future”.

During a time of critical challenges,
ranging from a global pandemic to climate change to conflict between nations to systemic problems creating unequal societies, education about big issues – supporting opportunities and change – is essential. It is the perfect time to learn about other important issues, like the threat of pollution to ocean health around the world, the importance of recycling plastics, and the benefits of clean water initiatives in preserving marine life, ecosystems, and people’s health.

As World Teachers’ Day raises awareness about the role teachers play in education at all levels all over the world and praises them for their contributions, it is an important reminder that education is continuous and everyone can learn. There are always new skills to master, advanced techniques to adopt, and ongoing changes to confront. Most importantly, learning is rewarding. It makes people wiser, sensible, and well informed to make better and more impactful decisions.

把手沾湿后涂上足够的肥皂泡;
用肥皂把你的手搓在一起擦出泡沫,在手背、手掌、手指之间和指甲缝涂上泡沫;
搓洗你的手至少20秒;
用干净的自来水彻底冲洗双手和手腕;
用干净的纸巾擦干双手或风干。

科普洗手的好处:

减少腹泻病患者人数;
降低免疫系统弱的人患腹泻病的概率;
在普通人群中减少如感冒等呼吸道疾病;
减少学童因肠胃疾病造成的缺勤。

Literacy Goes Beyond the Ability to Read and Write

While literacy is defined as the ability to read and write, it goes well beyond these basic abilities to include knowledge and social development.

On September 8, International Literacy Day was observed around the world. Decided by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), this holiday is celebrated to remind everyone of the importance of literacy for individuals and communities. Most significantly, it strives to advance efforts for more sustainable societies by making positive and lasting connections between “literacy and technical and vocational skills in policies, practice, systems and governance”.

International Literacy Day is often celebrated in empowering ways. People volunteer in local libraries, reading clubs, and storytelling groups to inspire others through reading. They also donate to charities that want to help eliminate illiteracy through reading and writing as well as provide teaching and learning resources. Perhaps the most endearing way to honor the holiday is to give someone a book.

As International Literacy Day each year calls on policymakers, advocates, and others to take action, it is the responsibility of everyone to continue this effort and beyond just reading and writing. Literacy is the foundation of knowledge in all areas.

For example, there is a need for water literacy and learning about water quality and watershed health. While most people know the benefits of water, they are not fully aware of its value, scarcity, and need for more efficient use. Water literacy educates people about water sources, clean water systems, the importance of water management and preservation, and the necessity for water sustainability.

Learning about water quality leads to understanding the suitability of water for drinking and other uses based on certain physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Knowing about watersheds (the land that drains to a particular stream, river, or bay) is just as important. Specifically, when they are healthy and functioning well, they provide nutrients, clean water, and habitat for plants and animals. They move sediment from mountains to beaches and bays, creating diverse landscapes and environments. They purify and store water, and even affect air quality by absorbing pollutants.

Life Solutions understands the importance of water literacy and continues to provide educational presentations and seminars that broaden knowledge for organizations, charities, schools, and social enterprises about water quality and efficiency in the Asia Pacific region as well as the global pollution caused by the plastic bottle industry.

As they continue to deepen their understanding of water risks and scarcity, they continue to share their knowledge with businesses, suppliers, volunteer organizations, and the public. They believe the more they educate about transitioning to clean and healthy drinking water through environmentally friendly solutions the bigger impact they will have.

It is their ongoing contribution to literacy, to advance efforts for more sustainable societies, and to help make a difference.

At Life Solutions, we continue to deepen our understanding of water risks and scarcity, and to share our knowledge with business and residential clients, staff members, suppliers, volunteer organizations, and the general public across China.

This is one way we live our mission of inspiring China’s transition to clean and healthy drinking water through outstanding customer service and environmentally friendly solutions.

The Many Benefits of International Crab Fest Day

To celebrate International Crab Fest Day, which is September 14, many people go to the shores with their crab baskets or to the local market to buy crabs. As the holiday’s name clearly states, it is about crabs.

Besides enjoying popular seafood, the benefits of International Crab Fest Day are many. Crabs are plentiful all over the world. Whether Dungeness, Stone, Snow, King, or Blue crabs, more than a million tons are consumed globally every year. There are thousands of varieties of crabs, and depending on the type, saltwater or freshwater, they can range in size from several inches to several feet in diameter.

Additionally, crabs can be eaten in an assortment of ways. Steamed crabs are most popular, but the succulent seafood is relished baked, boiled, and grilled. While they are celebrated in September, crabs are eaten all year long. Delicious dishes with crabmeat include crab cakes, soups, chowders, and stews.

However, the benefits of International Crab Fest Day go beyond this holiday festivity with tasty food. Since many crabs live in water and fishermen use the small crabs to catch large fish like bass, it is a time to appreciate and support clean marine waters. Pollution is one of the greatest threats to ocean health worldwide, jeopardizing ecosystems and habitats of many species. Plastic contamination like water bottles take hundreds of years to decompose and can release toxic substances into the water.

Clean water initiatives can help prevent pollution that harms marine life and potentially human health. Two years ago, Life Solutions partnered with Green Initiatives to learn about preserving the local environment and making a positive difference for marine life and ecosystems. Their efforts involved picking up trash along the Yangtze River that flowed through the Baoshan Wusong Pao Taiwan Wetland Forest National Park.

Over the years, the area adapted to changing conditions of marshland with fluvial and oceanic influences. Rich plant life, alluvial sediments, humidity, salty winds, and flooded soils shaped the development of this wetland along with the effects of tidal oscillation, water currents, and river flow.

Today, thanks to preservation efforts to protect the river water and the organisms living in the wetland, this National park is an admired, scenic attraction of Shanghai City. It features environmental restoration and cultural reconstruction, which protects the original wetland and creates a captivating landscape of large and small ecological islands against the river bank.

For those who have not, consider celebrating International Crab Fest Day. But do not be satisfied with just its crab-eating tradition. Reflect on the importance of aquaculture and healthy marine ecosystems. Recognize the dangerous effects of pollution and the importance of maintaining clean water. And vow to make a positive difference so that International Crab Fest Day can be celebrated for years to come.

The Economic Value of Clean Drinking Water Solutions

Water is essential for human life, and most people have experienced the feeling of not getting enough water and being sluggish or light-headed from dehydration. Fresh drinking water free from contaminants is known to help avoid many common health problems, like fatigue, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, weakness, and lethargy. In addition, it flushes out waste from the body, transports necessary nutrients to stay well, regulates body temperature, and boosts energy levels.

While the health benefits of clean drinking water are well known, the economic value of clean drinking water is not as apparent.
For clean water, most people drink bottled water. Although the cost of a plastic bottle of water may not seem very expensive, it can be over time in several different ways. Approximately $1.50 on average, it is substantially more when considering the expenses associated with its production and distribution. The cost is even more significant when taking into account the effects it has on the environment. From the amount of energy required to produce plastic bottles to the ongoing waste in landfills from lack of decomposition, bottled water is pricey. And, this does not include the many bottles that are not recycled and end up in oceans, polluting the water, disrupting marine ecosystems and contaminating fish and other seafood.

Studies show that people choose bottled water over other bottled beverages. Statistics show that billions of dollars are spent on bottled water annually. Considering the demand for fresh drinking water and how much it takes to produce and dispose of bottled water, it is actually quite costly for a product that can be easily available for much less and with more sustainable options.

These options include clean drinking water solutions or water filtration products that purify drinking water by filtering out pollutants. They can include carbon charcoal filters in a pitcher or as part of a faucet-mount, ultraviolet light units or reverse osmosis, water distillers (entire systems or portable countertops), or another form of the water treatment process.

Whether it is a classic stand-alone water infiltration system or an elegant, space-saving design, they are energy efficient and save money. Though the cost savings from using a clean drinking water solution depends on the size of the water filtration system, the type of water filtration system, and other important factors, on average it takes approximately18 months to reap rewards on water consumption when compared to water in plastic bottles.

Using a clean drinking water solution that delivers fresh, safe water without the economic strain or environmental damage caused by plastic bottles is cost-effective and advantageous. Switching from bottled water to a clean drinking water solution that delivers crisp-tasting, filtered water for a fraction of the cost saves money over the long term. It is a smart decision that impacts not only people’s pocketbooks but their health and the health of the environment.
