Hydration Strategies for Summer:
Why cold drinks won’t cut it!

In the scorching summer heat, a mere five-minute outdoor walk leaves us sweating for hours and yearning for the relief of an ice-cold drink. It’s comforting and satisfying, but here’s the twist: those refreshing cold drinks might not quench your thirst as you’d expect.

When we’re thirsty, cold or light stimuli can amplify the brain’s “drink water” signal, influencing how much we consume. Ice-cold beverages, like mineral water or soda, can exaggerate this effect, tricking the brain into thinking it’s well-hydrated, and thus reducing the urge to continue drinking. These drinks, though refreshing, can become a deceptive “thirst-quenching cheat tool.”

While cold drinks won’t truly satisfy our thirst, their refreshing allure is undeniable, especially in the scorching summer heat. Yet, beneath the surface of this delightful chill, linger a host of side effects.

1. Menstrual Cramps and Cold Drinks: A Cautionary Advisory for Women

It’s important for women to be mindful, as the consumption of overly cold drinks and foods may potentially initiate uterine contractions, resulting in dysmenorrhea – the so-called menstrual cramps. Choosing warmer food alternatives both during and prior to menstruation is a recommended approach to minimize discomfort.1

2. Stomach Discomfort and Cold Drinks

Consuming cold drinks, especially icy ones, can prompt stomach reactions causing discomfort. The abrupt temperature shift might trigger muscle contractions and cramps. Additionally, certain cold drinks can solidify stomach fats when combined with body warmth, hindering digestion. Cold beverages can reduce gastric acid secretion, impairing effective food breakdown, potentially causing bloating, cramps, and indigestion. Sugary, spiced cold drinks can alter stomach pH, neutralizing acid and generating discomfort. In summation, cold drink intake can disrupt stomach dynamics through temperature shifts, solidification, reduced acid, and altered pH, contributing to potential discomfort and digestive issues.2

3. Obesity and Cold Drinks

Iced, carbonated beverages, usually well-known for their sugar content, hold a potential risk for obesity. Frequent consumption of such drinks can contribute to weight gain. Moreover, these drinks often harbor chemical additives and preservatives, further raising health concerns with repeated consumption. By delving into these chilling indulgences, we expose a hidden peril that extends beyond mere refreshment.3

4. Hypoglycemia and Cold Drinks

Persistent consumption of excessive cold beverages can lead to low blood glucose levels. Prolonged intake may trigger symptoms like palpitations, tremors, and sweating in individuals with low blood sugar. In more severe instances, limb weakness and even fainting can ensue, unveiling a potential link between icy indulgence and blood sugar imbalances.4

When the scorching summer arrives, our natural inclination is towards cool and invigorating cold drinks. However, a surprising revelation awaits: the true champions of thirst-quenching are boiled water and hot tea.

Tea, brimming with potassium, surpasses chilled beverages in its cooling prowess. It not only satiates thirst but also alleviates fatigue. Optimal temperature control is crucial to avoid esophageal discomfort. For those averse to plain water, a hint of zest can be added with two slices of lemon.

As the mercury climbs, our hydration needs surge. While an icy glass of water beckons, the solution lies in introducing Life Solutions’ water purification equipment. We help you elevate your hydration experience and achieve instant refreshment by simplifying your thirst-quenching routine.

Unlock the Power of Clean Water: Eliminating Heavy Metals for Healthier Living

Water is the essence of life, but in today’s fast-paced world, the safety of our drinking water is increasingly uncertain. Are you aware that the tap water we rely on daily carries health risks? Excessive heavy metal content in tap water can have detrimental effects on our well-being.

Unraveling the Sources of Heavy Metals in Tap Water

1. Industrial Pollution Discharge:

The discharge of heavy metal wastewater, including hazardous substances like Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Mercury (Hg), Nickel (Ni), and Zinc (Zn), from industrial processes such as mining, machinery manufacturing, and the chemical industry, poses a severe threat to our water resources. This pollution has resulted in significant harm to both our environment and human health.

2. Faucets and Water Pipes:

Water pollution has reached alarming levels, even with diligent efforts by water treatment plants to remove harmful contaminants. Aging water pipes contribute to “secondary pollution” as they release varying amounts of heavy metals during water transportation. Furthermore, we cannot overlook the potential heavy metal contamination from faucets. Copper alloy faucets, commonly used today, contain copper, zinc, tin, iron, manganese, lead, aluminum, and other elements. Over time, lead leeks into the water, causing further contamination.

The Hazards of Excessive Heavy Metals in Drinking Water

Tap water can harbor an array of heavy metals, including mercury, chromium, cadmium, lead, cobalt, vanadium, antimony, manganese, tin, zinc, and arsenic. The hazards associated with elevated levels of heavy metals in water are numerous. They can lead to heavy metal poisoning, impair important organ functions, and damage the nervous system.

For instance, let’s consider the well-known effects of lead poisoning. Adults suffering from lead poisoning often experience symptoms such as fatigue, depression, heart failure, abdominal pain, and renal deficiency. Children, on the other hand, are significantly more vulnerable. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible damage to their intelligence, behavioral development, physical growth, and nervous, digestive, circulatory, and urinary systems.

Moreover, heavy metals are invisible and odorless, making them impossible to detect with the naked eye. Boiling water is ineffective in removing these contaminants and may even lead to chemical reactions that form harmful substances.

Effective Methods to Remove Heavy Metals from Water

1. Absorption Method:

The absorption method is widely used to combat heavy metal contamination. It involves utilizing materials with porous surfaces and strong absorption capabilities, such as activated carbon, minerals, and molecular sieves. While activated carbon is a popular adsorbent, its high cost and limited lifespan restrict its complete removal of heavy metals from water.

2. Electrolysis:

Electrochemical methods leverage the principles of electrolysis to enrich heavy metals through redox reactions occurring on positive and negative electrodes. The electrolysis method encompasses electrolytic precipitation and heavy metal recovery electrolysis, depending on the type of anode employed. However, this technique consumes substantial electricity and requires numerous iron plates. Furthermore, the separation of sludge poses challenges, leading to high operational costs.

3. Air Flotation Method:

The air flotation method involves the reaction between ferrous sulfate and heavy metal ions in an acidic environment, resulting in the formation of flocs in an alkaline environment. These flocs are then buoyed to the surface by countless fine air bubbles, clarifying the water. However, this method entails significant chemical consumption, often yielding suboptimal removal outcomes and generating substantial solid waste. The disposal of solid waste incurs high costs as well.

4. Extraction Method:

The extraction method introduces a substance that is insoluble in water but soluble in a solvent into the sewage during treatment. However, this approach is costly, as it requires the addition of solutes or extracts to effectively remove heavy metals.

5. Water Purifier Filtration Method:

The filtration method, commonly employed in water purifiers, offers a practical solution for heavy metal removal. Currently, reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers are highly regarded. Water filtered through an RO membrane is devoid of harmful substances while retaining essential minerals vital for the human body. Drinking RO-purified water over an extended period does not have adverse effects on health.

Introducing Life Solutions RO Water Purification Equipment

Guide to maintaining water dispenser filter elements.

In the hot summer days, as the heat increases, so does our water consumption, and the frequency of water purifier use increases. As an important line of defense for safe drinking water, water purifiers require careful maintenance, and many people do not realize that water purifiers need to be cared for even in the summer! What to look for when using and maintaining a water purifier in high temperatures?

01. “Sunscreen” Protection

During the hot summer days with the blazing sun overhead, both we and the water purifiers need sun protection. Direct sunlight and the rising temperatures in hot and humid environments can promote the growth of bacteria and algae in the water purifier filter, which can affect the health of drinking water.

In addition, intense sunlight can affect the water purifier’s internal components, circuits, and plumbing, causing aging due to UV rays and shortening the life of the unit. Therefore, the water conditioner should be placed in a shady location. If this is not possible, a sunshade can be attached to the device as a “sunshade”.

02. “Frequent Bathing”

In summer, people tend to drink water more frequently and in larger quantities. Combined with the higher temperatures, bacteria are more likely to multiply in the humid environment inside the water purifier. Therefore, it is important to clean the water purifier regularly and promptly.

① Life Solutions considers the need for internal cleaning and replacement of water quality in water dispensers, and specific treatments can be applied to different models.

② Follow the steps given to purify certain water purifiers. Drain the previously stored water and introduce fresh purified water. This will eliminate odors inside the water purifier, making drinking water safer and creating a green and healthy drinking environment.

③ Free yourself from traditional time-consuming and labor-intensive cleaning methods. Operation is simple and flexible without the need to disassemble any equipment. Just follow the steps to drain the faucet and solve water quality problems.

03. “New Attire”

In summer, when a lot of water is used, the water purifiers run at full capacity every day, which shortens the life of the filter cartridge. The filter cartridge is the core element that traps pollutants in the water, and it affects water quality to some degree. Overuse of the filter cartridge can also lead to secondary contamination.

Especially in hot summers, bacteria are more likely to multiply. Therefore, timely replacement of the filter cartridge is necessary. Different types of filter cartridges have different service life. Compared to other types, the RO reverse osmosis membrane has a longer life. However, regardless of the type of filter cartridge, it should be replaced in a timely manner to continue to protect the health of drinking water. If the water purifier is used frequently in the summer, you should replace it earlier.

① Life Solutions water purifiers with RO reverse osmosis filtration have longer filter life.

② To facilitate timely replacement of filter cartridges, Life Solutions water purifiers are equipped with a display on the housing that monitors usage in real time and intelligently reminds users to replace them.

③ Check the system regularly, replace the filter cartridge at least three times a year, and provide comprehensive maintenance service to ensure effective operation of the water purifier.

Given the scorching heat and the significant increase in water consumption, the importance of healthy and safe drinking water cannot be ignored. Water purifiers also need to be properly cared for during the summer. If you notice any anomalies during use, please contact Life Solutions. Life Solutions has a comprehensive customer service system.

World Oceans DaylGuarding the Blue with Us

This year’s World Oceans Day and National Oceans Awareness Day focus on “Protecting the Marine Ecosystem and Harmonious Coexistence between People and Nature.” The aim is to raise global awareness about the oceans’ vital role in climate regulation and promote effective measures for marine environment protection and the preservation of a healthy ecosystem. These events emphasize the importance of understanding and safeguarding the oceans, urging individuals worldwide to take action for their conservation and sustainability.

The ocean sustains life, offers valuable resources, and unites us in a shared destiny. As inhabitants of this blue planet, let us join forces to combat marine pollution and protect our precious blue realm. Together, we can safeguard its future.

1.Marine Pollution Hazards: assessing the current situation

Marine ecosystems suffer from destructive impacts caused by the introduction of harmful substances, resulting in pollution that damages biological resources and poses threats to human health. Fishing and other activities at sea also hinder seawater and environmental quality.1 The persistent, widespread, and challenging-to-control nature of marine pollution stems from its multiple sources.2 Over the past decades, rapid global industrialization has intensified marine pollution, leading to significant ecological changes in local areas and a concerning trend of continual expansion.

China, a maritime powerhouse, boasts 18,000 km of coastline, numerous seaport cities, and a third of its land mass dedicated to marine territory.3 Despite its global prominence in marine life diversity, marine renewable energy, and oil resources, China faces escalating marine pollution due to rapid urbanization and population growth. The decline of fisheries and the surge of natural disasters have spurred contemplation on effective management strategies for the marine environment.

2. Origins of Marine pollutants

1.Oil pollution
Oil pollution poses severe threats to marine life, as oil films or condensations can adhere to fish eggs or larvae, causing their death or deformities. Additionally, fish and shrimp may emit a pungent odor as a result of exposure to oil contamination.4

2.Metals and acids/bases
Metals such as chromium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, silver, cadmium, antimony, mercury, lead, phosphorus, arsenic, etc., and acids/bases have detrimental effects on marine life, causing toxicity, reduced growth, reproductive issues, and even death. These pollutants disrupt the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and pose a significant threat to the well-being of marine organisms.5

3.Pesticides, organic waste, and domestic sewage
Pesticides, organic waste liquids, and domestic sewage enter the ocean primarily through runoff, exerting strong toxic effects on marine organisms. In severe cases, organic and domestic wastewater can trigger harmful red tide occurrences.6 In China’s near-shore waters, over 300 red tide incidents have been recorded since 1980, with one lasting 72 days in 1989, resulting in economic losses nearing 100 million yuan.

4.Plastic waste and plastic pollutants
Plastic waste and pollutants have devastating effects on marine life, causing the deaths of around 100 million organisms annually. Nearly a thousand species are impacted by marine pollution. Microplastic particles, known as PM2.5 present a grave threat to coral reef ecosystems. 7

3.Safeguarding the Ocean and Exploring Solutions

1.Mitigating the Carbon Footprint
Human-induced climate change significantly impacts the marine environment. By reducing your carbon footprint, you can control ocean acidification and minimize harm to coral reefs and marine life. Adopt eco-friendly travel practices, utilize energy-efficient lighting, limit elevator usage, employ fans instead of excessive air conditioning, and embrace clean energy solutions. Implementing these actions at home or in the workplace empowers individuals to make independent contributions to ocean conservation.

2.Preserving the Beach Environment
After your beach visit, kindly ensure to remove and recycle your trash responsibly. Consider lending your family or friends a hand in collecting litter left behind by others. Active participation as responsible citizens in global beach cleanup initiatives and ocean litter-free campaigns is crucial.

3.Minimizing Plastic Waste: A Call for Sustainable Practices
Decrease reliance on plastic by opting for reusable cups, bowls, and shopping bags while minimizing the use of disposable plastic items like bags and straws. Stay informed about plastic recycling programs and make an effort to reduce the consumption and disposal of single-use plastic products. By doing so, we can significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste entering our oceans.

Li Xia and the Transition into Summer

As spring fades away and the days grow longer, nature undergoes a remarkable transformation, signaling the arrival of summer. In the traditional Chinese calendar, this is marked by the first solar term known as Li Xia and it symbolizes the official commencement of summer.

Li Xia typically begins around May 5th each year, as the sun’s celestial longitude reaches 45 degrees. It is a time when the Earth absorbs more solar energy, warming the land and allowing plants to flourish. During this transitioning time, we should focus not only on increasing our sun protection but as well as the following:

Attention 1
Paying close attention to dehydration

Despite not yet experiencing the scorching heat, the May sun is already unleashing waves of intense heat. A glass of ice-cold water would be most welcome to prevent excessive perspiration for a day! During hot weather, people tend to sweat profusely and require more water, often feeling parched and in need of hydration. It is essential to replenish fluids promptly to avoid dehydration.1

Attention 2
Checking in with our emotions

Excessive heat can trigger a range of unwarranted behaviors, such as increased irritability, conflicts, arguments, and even public outbursts. This is attributed to the discomfort caused by high temperatures, which can lead to feelings of irritability and restlessness. In such situations, it is crucial to maintain adequate hydration levels by consuming more water, as this can play a pivotal role in stabilizing one’s emotional state. 2

Attention 3
Avoiding fatigue

The phenomenon of fatigue and the inclination to take summer naps can leave one with a sense of depletion. Persistent feelings of drowsiness, lethargy, and an inability to shake off the weariness can pervade one’s daily experience. While weather and seasonal factors contribute to these sensations, sudden bouts of fatigue, anxiety, irritability, or difficulties concentrating may actually indicate insufficient hydration within the body. In such instances, consuming a glass of fresh water can serve as a revitalizing elixir, reinvigorating both mind and body.3

Our efforts to protect water resources and promote healthy drinking water are achieved through high-quality filtration products and impeccable services. We aim to promote China’s transition to excellent and healthy drinking water by collaborating with our partners and emphasizing the importance of corporate social responsibility. Moreover, we recognize our social responsibility and actively seek to create a positive impact on society by prioritizing environmental preservation in our business practices.

Increasing Marine Ecological Safety through Effective Plastic Recycling Strategies

As a provider of water purification systems, it is our responsibility to offer customers eco-friendly options that not only conserve energy but also minimize the use of plastic water bottles. The persistence of plastic in the environment is a major concern, with its long-term presence causing harm to soil and wildlife. Recent research by a global team, published in the journal Science, indicates that without effective measures, plastic waste on land and oceans could increase by a staggering 1.3 billion tons within two decades. As we strive to meet the demands of today’s consumers, it is imperative that we prioritize sustainable practices and take action to reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment.

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the local environment and make positive contributions to marine life and ecosystems, Life Solutions collaborates with the Green Initiative on recycling programs. Our team of professionals dedicated an entire day to the collection and recycling of plastic waste along the Yangtze River, an experience that bears significant potential for positive social impact. Through our shared efforts, we are proud to have contributed to the protection of the river, wetlands, and the diverse fauna and flora that inhabit these ecosystems.

Saving Resource Consumption through Vegetarian Monday Initiative

Every vegetarian Monday can save 37500 liters of water! Reducing meat consumption can reduce water waste and energy and resource consumption.2 Vegetarian Monday, a movement initiated by Paul, Mary, and Stella McCartney in 2009, has emerged as a powerful tool to raise awareness about the harmful environmental effects of meat consumption. By reducing the amount of meat we consume, we can conserve water, reduce resource consumption, and combat climate change. This approach is not only a responsible choice for individuals but also holds significant potential to enhance the health and well-being of employees, further advancing Life Solutions’ mission. By emphasizing the positive impacts of Vegetarian Monday, we can encourage more people to join the movement and make meaningful contributions to the preservation of our natural resources.

Calling for the Protection of the Earth, through Educational Seminars

At Life Solutions, we remain dedicated to our corporate mission of promoting high-quality and healthy drinking water through exceptional customer service and sustainable solutions. To achieve this, we offer a range of educational lectures and seminars covering topics such as water quality, energy efficiency, and plastic pollution in the Asia Pacific region. We recognize the importance of addressing water scarcity and are committed to sharing our knowledge with our commercial and residential clients, employees, suppliers, volunteer organizations, and the public across China.

By prioritizing education and promoting awareness, we can empower individuals and organizations to make informed decisions that contribute to a sustainable future for our planet and our communities.

Reducing Resource Waste through Paper Recycling Programs

Paper recycling programs are designed to provide Chinese enterprises and companies with responsible means to recycle paper and promote awareness to reduce paper waste. By adopting these programs, we are not only saving paper but also conserving precious resources, including 800kg of renewable new paper, 4ms of wood, 400kg of coal, 500kW of electricity, and 470t of water per ton of waste paper.

As an environmentally conscious organization, we are proud to recommend sustainable solutions to corporate clients across China to encourage sustainable practices in their workplaces. Moreover, we have incorporated these environmental measures into our own internal office habits, further reinforcing our commitment to sustainable business practices.

At Life Solutions, we believe that protecting the Earth is not just a one-day event, but a continuous effort. On World Earth Day 2023, we urge everyone to take practical action and join hands to protect our earth and create a sustainable future for generations to come.

World Health Day丨How unsafe drinking water affects human health?

World Health Day is an annual event that is celebrated on April 7th. The day is set aside to create awareness of various health issues and to encourage people to make healthier choices. The event is organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.

Especially on World Health Day, the hazards of drinking unsafe water are being emphasized.

How do these impact human health?

According to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of diseases and 50% of child deaths worldwide are related to poor drinking water quality. A well-known magazine reported that nearly 25% of Chinese people are drinking water that does not meet hygienic standards.1

Water contains pollutants, including organic pollutants and disinfection by-products from chlorination, which can persist for extended periods and pose significant harm to long-term exposed populations. The chronic toxicity of these pollutants is particularly noteworthy. Out of 2221 organic chemical pollutants detected in water globally, 765 are present in tap water. Among them, 20 are known carcinogens, and 23 are suspected carcinogens.2

The United Nations Health Organization’s estimate indicates that at present, 25% of the population experiences illnesses due to water contamination,3 which typically comprises chemical, physical, and biological pollution.

Biological pollution encompasses bacterial, viral, and parasitic contaminants, which can lead to water pollution and subsequently result in infectious diseases. Consumption or direct contact with polluted water can potentially cause illness. Physical pollution, on the other hand, comprises thermal, and radioactive pollution, while chemical pollution refers to the contamination of organic and inorganic compounds that can cause severe harm to human health, including acute or chronic poisoning, cancer, or genetic mutations. 4

World Water Day| Accelerating Change

World Water Day is celebrated on March 22nd each year and the United Nations has set the theme of World Water Day in 2023 as “Accelerating Change”. The significance of World Water Day is to raise public awareness on water conservation and strengthen the protection of water resources.

Water is an important natural resource and environmental factor that is indispensable and irreplaceable for the survival of all life and social and economic development. However, available water resources are very scarce and the world’s water resources are facing unprecedented threats. It seems that many water resources are abundant in total (including seawater, fresh water, groundwater, rainwater, ice), but more than 70% of the earth’s surface area is covered by the ocean and freshwater resources on earth only account for 2.8% of the total water volume, moreover, the total amount of freshwater available for human use only accounts for 0.34% of the total freshwater storage on earth.1

What is even more serious is the uneven spatial distribution of the only available freshwater resources with more than half of the world’s freshwater resources concentrated in more than a dozen countries. According to a report published by the World Water Institute in 2019, roughly a quarter of the world’s population faces a crisis without freshwater resources.2

Although our freshwater resources total 2.8 trillion cubic meters, accounting for six percent of the world’s water resources. However, due to the large population, China’s per capita water resources are very poor, with only 2,300 cubic meters of water per capita, which is only a quarter of the world average, moreover, we are one of the world’s poorest countries in terms of per capita water resources,3 so water conservation is urgent!

Water saving tips

  • When washing hands, face and teeth, do not keep the tap open, but use a container or cup to save 18 liters of water per person each time.
  • If the water heater at home is non-instantaneous, you can put a basin to catch cold water used for laundry and mopping.
  • Do not keep the shower head on all the time, you can intermittently open shower head when washing hair or apply shower gel.
  • When washing kitchen dishes, you can use paper towels or cloth to wipe off the oil firstly, which can reduce water consumption.
  • Regularly check the water tap and repair it in time when there is leakage.

Clean water, a condition for survival

The protection of water resources should not only start from water conservation, but also strengthen water pollution control. There are more than 20 countries with water shortages worldwide and more than 4.2 billion people live in environments lacking sufficient cleanliness and hygiene.4 Information from the World Health Organization shows that 25 million people die each year from drinking unclean water worldwide; 80% of diseases and 33% of deaths in developing countries are caused by drinking contaminated water.5

In China, drinking water mainly comes from groundwater and rivers, but 90% of the groundwater has suffered from different degrees of pollution, of which 60% is serious.6 Even if the tap water has been disinfected, the secondary pollution will still occur in transportation process because of old pipes and secondary water supply.

There are many safety hazards in drinking water, which have a subtle, far-reaching and lasting impact on human health. Boiling water for drinking sounds environmentally friendly and healthy, but the presence of viruses, bacteria, heavy metals and other harmful substances in the water will not disappear with high temperature boiling. So, the water purification equipment comes in handy.

Life Solutions

Life Solutions water purification equipment uses RO reverse osmosis filtration technology which can filter out 99% of impurities, rust, colloids, bacteria, and other harmful substances. In this way, it is able to ensure that you and your family can use water by feeling at ease.

Water pollution is the focus of attention around the world, although it takes long time and great efforts to improve water quality and it may be hard to change the status quo by ourselves, the water in the cup is at least decided by yourself.
